Learn to Spin Yarn on a Spinning Wheel
with Susan Snider
People have been spinning yarn on spinning wheels since the 11th century. It continues to be a wonderful way to dive into or more fully participate in the world of fiber art and craft.
In this workshop, students will learn how to prepare and handle fibers for spinning. Different fibers, like wool, alpaca and mohair will be available to spin. Controlling twist, plying, and other details of making yarn will be covered, especially the mechanics of a spinning wheel and how to keep it in perfect running order.
This class can be taken repeatedly, to practice and hone spinning skills.
Materials fee: $10 included in cost of class. Students are welcome to bring their own wheels and the school will have wheels available for use.
Natural Edge Bowl
with Adam Wager
In this class, students who have previously turned a basic bowl will learn to turn a natural edge bowl – a bowl where the rim follows the natural contour of the tree’s outside surface. The new challenges in turning this sort of bowl include a heightened reliance on balancing/centering the blank when first mounting it and making clean finishing cuts on an interrupted surface. If you can reliably find and ride the bevel when turning a basic bowl, this project is a great way to take the next step and improve your touch with the tool and your sense of form, and possibly pick up an advanced cutting technique or two.
Introduction to Filet Crochet Lace
with Claire Graybuck
Learn to design and stitch your own custom filet crochet patterns! Filet crochet is a method that allows you to make lacy patterns using basic crochet stitches. During this workshop, each student will have the opportunity to create their own unique pattern grid and learn how to use it to make a finished piece. Tools and materials will be provided. Previous crochet experience is helpful, but not required.
